Psychological domestic abuse to become a crime

by Émer O’Toole

PSYCHOLOGICAL domestic abuse will become a crime thanks to a new Scottish law.

Nicola Sturgeon says the bill recognises the ‘devastating effect’ that non-physical abuse can have on victims.

The legislation says psychological abuse includes isolating a partner from friends and relatives and controlling their day-to-day activities.

Jan Smith of the Women’s Support Project believes the law has come at the right time.
